“MACBETH” is the kind of challenge that a director prepares for years, longs for and “dreads”
at the same time (similar to Macbeth killing the king).
Among the various famous thoughts of Shakespeare that we often quote, a special place
has: “Macbeth does murder sleep … Macbeth shall sleep no more!”.
There are various interesting studies on the subject of Shakespeare and dreams in his
plays. Of all Shakespeare’s great tragedies, “MACBETH” is considered to be the most closely
related to dreams (Freud also dealt with “Macbeth”). In that sense, this play was created as a
research related to dreams. Considering that it is inspired by various dream images, I could say
that the main character in the performance is – Dream. Everything that happens – happens in
Macbeth’s head. Macbeth says at one point: “And nothing is, But what is not.”
This wonderful thought struck me as something from which it is possible to interpret the whole
play. From the moment the witches tell him the prophecy, for Macbeth reality becomes a
nightmare, it seems that everything is the fruit of his own darkened consciousness, the scenes
come as if from a dream: real and unreal, possible and impossible, real and fictitious, they mix
so much that it is sometimes impossible to distinguish them, it is not known exactly where
one ends and the other begins. They become the edge of a knife that he moves precariously all
the time. The world as a completely chaotic, “unreal” place – I think it is a fairly accurate diagnosis of
everything we are currently living.
