About us: Maria João | OGRE electric

We’re an innovative jazz & electronic quartet that fuses different musical styles, from funk and hip hop to pop and classical — all showcasing Maria João’s unique, internationally acclaimed vocal style.
We’ve been creating music together for 13 years, and our most recent source of inspiration has been The Bard himself.

The project: “Songs for Shakespeare”

Our most recent album, “Songs for Shakespeare,” breathes fresh life into Shakespeare’s immortal words.
First performed at The Gyula Shakespeare Festival in 2015 and later touring to Gdańsk and Itaka, the project was so successful that in 2022 we expanded it, collaborating with a Shakespearean actor live onstage and adding depth with a nine-musician classic ensemble.

Performance possibilities

“Songs for Shakespeare” is led by our core quartet:

Maria João – Vocals
João Farinha – Keyboards and Synthesizers
André Nascimento – Electronics
Silvan Strauss – Drums

The performance is at its strongest when accompanied by a range of classical musicians and a Shakesperean actor.

We currently have arrangements for both a 9-musician ensemble, and for a symphony orchestra.
