Alexander Galin is one of the leading Russian playwrights, director, screenwriter and actor. His dramaturgy is distinguished by a sharp, emotionally saturated, exciting language. His plays have a solid thematic basis, dynamic dialogues, the characters are colorful, the topics it covers both timeless and current. He has a fine sense of timing, for the contents that mark it, he knows the language they speak and the rhythm with which the people of his contemporaries live. His plays: "Retro", "Stars in the Morning Sky", The Clown and the Bandit", "Anomaly", "Audition", "Patient" etc. are widely known not only in Russia but also in many countries of the world. They are performed on the stage of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre, at the Odeon Theater in Paris, at the Schiller Theater in Berlin. In Russia, Galin is called a "man-orchestra" - and he himself was the director of his plays in Russia several times, USA, Italy, and he also performed as an actor. He is the director of two popular films - "The Cloak of Casanova" and "Photography"..
"Audition", like all Galin's plays, builds its dramatic structure on the basis of an ordinary life story - this time taken from the time of the 90s, the beginning of groundbreaking social changes in post-socialist countries, time of ultimate collision between "new" and "old", between one's own ideas about life and the concrete reality of life, between self-interest in the struggle for existence and compassion for the other. From that world of lost life criteria and landmarks in life, in which there is no place for illusions, a, however, people want to live humanly, the author builds a strong drama about the man of today, who in trying to "achieve something" (what is not "bare existence") make life a constant audition.
The story is simple and laughably absurd. Or, to tears. Who looks at human failures to understand himself. All plot lines of the play revolve around an audition announcement in the local newspaper of a small provincial town.. The published call: "A solid Japanese company offers you a prestigious job in an elite night show", for the women of that small abandoned town it turns out to be a real chance to get out of life's impasse and the monotony of the everyday life they live, in someone, from their point of view, wonderful and promising world. In misunderstanding, first – on one's own life claims and possibilities, and then - at the real moment of the time in which they live, the characters of the play inevitably become interpreters of tragicomic situations, brought to the point of absurdity and grotesqueness.
Well, now, how much such an interpretation will make us laugh, and how much it will hurt us, we'll see. "Audition" Begins!
